Camping within the
Wichita Mtns Wildlife Refuge

We will be at Camp Doris in the Wichita’s over Saturday night and celebrate the New Year outdoors. We will hike Saturday and Sunday and return late Sunday night.

If you want to join us, we will be in my red four door Ford pickup. I have called and campfires are allowed at Camp Doris (during the burn ban) as long as a fire ring is used. I will be carrying firewood down with me for that purpose.

Greenleaf Day Hike
The weather for this Saturday (Jan. 7th) looks awesome for a day hike.  Sunny and temps in the low 70s.

I’m going to head over to Greenleaf State Park and hike about 8 miles of the 16 mile primitive trail.  I plan on leaving about 7:30 AM as it is about 2.5 hours of driving each way.  But the hike is worth the drive.  It is a very well maintained trail with sections going through hills and a section along the lake.

If anyone is interested in going, please email or call me and we can make arrangements for where to meet.  .

If you are planning on going bring a sack lunch, plenty of water and appropriate clothing

The Mission Statement of the Sierra Club’s
Inner City Outings Program

Sierra Club Inner City Outings is a community outreach program that provides opportunities for urban youth and adults to explore,
enjoy and protect the natural world.

On Saturday, January 21st we will take a group
of students to the Wichita Mtns Wildlife Refuge
for a Day Hike on the Mt Baldy Trail,
a tour of the visitor center & a drive up Mt Scott

Volunteers will need:

Adult volunteers will need the following:
1. footwear and clothing appropriate for the anticipated weather conditions and for rugged trail conditions;
2. plenty of water for themselves;
3. a lunch that can be carried on the trail;
4) to make arrangements for their own transportation from the school to the trailhead and back, (carpooling with other volunteers is encouraged. (students will be transported separately in agency vans)

Unless otherwise noted, the difficulty level
for all Inner City Outings is MODERATE

Participants should be able to easily walk 3 miles in less than an hour.  It is important that trip leaders be able to focus on the safety of the children and should not be distracted by adults having difficulty on the trail.  If you have any doubt about your ability to hike the trail, you should not go on an ICO until you have gone on a moderate rated adult outing without difficulty

Inner City Outings (ICO)
