The Great Plains Trail of Oklahoma
has been making steady progress toward development of a trail full of nature tourism opportunities and rich in historical and cultural heritage that tells the story of
the American Great Plains.

by
Trapper Heglin
with the OWPHA

From prairie chickens to horny toads, scissor-tail flycatchers to elk, the public and private lands of western Oklahoma are home to a diversity of unique and interesting wildlife species.

The Great Plains Trail of Oklahoma will showcase the
small-town hospitality and rich cultural and environmental heritage of the region.

The trail is a highway-based – wildlife viewing trail
that will span the entire western portion of the state
while attracting visitors to wildlife destinations within the states of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.

From its strong Native American heritage to its natural icons like the Wichita Mountains, Black Kettle National Grasslands, the Black Mesa, Little Sahara, Alabaster Caverns and The Great Salt Plains, western Oklahoma exhibits a sense of American history that has all but vanished elsewhere in the country.

There will be a Walk, Run or Cycle (your choice)

Starting at 5:45 pm
& returning in time for the meeting at 7:00 pm

We will depart from
where the trail passes in front of

the Chesapeake Boathouse

Walk – led by Lissa Ann Wohltmann
Cycle – led by Tom Kindinger
Run – led by John Burton
*******************

After the meeting we will move to a location in Bricktown
 for a beverage or two

We will be at:

Hiking/Backpacking
Guadalupe National Park
Texas’s highest point

I will be going to the Guadalupe National Park on a multi-day
hiking/backpacking trip in mid-March.

We will depart on March 11 (Saturday). I will be climbing Guadalupe peak, the highest point in Texas at 8750 ft.

In addition, I would also like to do the Permian trail as well as a
portion of McKittrick Canyon (all located within a short distance of
each other).

The climb up Guadalupe Peak and the Permian Trail each
take 7-8 hours and would be considered difficult day hikes.

The McKittrick Canyon Trails would require backpacking
for 2 days and would not be considered a simple day hike.

OKC-ON

Saint

Patrick’s

Day

Party

I would like to invite everyone
in the OKC-ON to my house
for a St. Patrick’s Day Bash

It’ll be BYOB and I will supply some snacks
but would really appreciate it

If everyone could bring a dish or some other snack
to make it more interesting.

Also, if anyone is interested there will be a poker table
available for Texas Hold’em. House rules are $10 tournament style with no additional buy ins after the start of a game and second place gets back their entry fee back, so bring your cash.

I also have a record player, lots
of old albums, and a room set aside for dancing.

Bring your own music if you have a favorite
that you want to hear or dance to.
The record player also has a CD and Cassette player.

There will be plenty of space to stay
over the night, so bring a sleeping bag if you want.

I will provide eggs and potatoes O’Brien for the morning after. Breakfast time depends on how late the party lasts.

This party is for
OKC-ON Members
and their Guests

ONLY !!!!

OKC Outdoor Network members
will be receiving an email from the OKC-ON

OKC Chapter Meeting of the
 Arkansas Canoe Club
Thursday, March 23 @ 6:00 pm
at Hideaway Pizza on North Western

All,
It’s again time to get together and speak of great things to come in OKC.
That’s right it’s time for our second meeting about the formation of the OKC chapter of the Arkansas Canoe Club.

So come on out and bring all the paddlers you know
with a little challenge from me.

Last time we had 26 people come, I want over 30!
So get the word out to all the local paddlers and let’s make a statement.

On this months agenda are names for the chapter, officer recommendations, trip plans, canoe school, and community volunteer projects.

So come on out, order some pizza, and let’s talk about paddling!
See you there,
Randy Clemens
